India

In order to meet the enormous demand for over 400,000 ports annually, ARENTO, the Egyptian Telecom Organization, entered a joint venture with the Egyptian Telephone Company and Siemens in April of 1990. This joint venture, EGTI (Egyptian German Telecommunication Industries S.A.E.), is responsible for the local production of the digital switching system, EWSD. A modern production facility with an annual production rate of 200,000 line units has since been erected in the "6th of October" industrial center on the outskirts of Cairo. It serves to transfer know-how and provide local jobs: the engineers and plant managers are Egyptian. Production began in the latter part of 1992.
Two factors were essential to the Siemens success story in India. For one, the trial EWSD exchange system in Calcutta, passed all performance tests required by the DOT with flying colors. The other factor was Siemens' predisposition to local manufacturing and SW development. Consequently, Siemens Telematic Ltd., a production facility with an annual capacity of 500,000 ports, was commissioned in 1993 in the Bengali metropolis of Calcutta. Since the end of 1994 Siemens is also manufactoring fiber optic cables in a newly built factory in Aurangabad for the indian market. Additionally, in 1994 "Siemens Communication Software Bangalore Ltd.", a software design center, was founded in the southwestern state of Karnataka. In three years time, up to 1,000 computer scientists will develop software for the entire range of EWSD products for worldwide distribution.
As to mobile radio communication India skipped the analogue technique and started directly in digital mobile radio networks based on the successful European standard GSM. In 1994 eight private network operators, two of them in each of the four cities Bombay, Calcutta, New Delhi, Madras got licences and will start service in 1995. Siemens supplies the mobile switching centres (MSC) to BPL Systems in Bombay, Usha Martin in Calcutta, and Sterling Cellular in New Delhi while Motorola provides the radio equipment (BSS). Initially an overall capacity for the three MSC of about 200.000 subscribers is realized, and a rapid expansion within the next few years is expected. Siemens also supplies infrastructure for Aircel-Digilink in Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar-Pradesh East as well as for Modicom in Karnataka and Punjab.

Indionesia

Siemens' activities in Indonesia date back to 1855. More than 100 years later, a licensing agreement with the Siemens partner P.T.INTI was concluded for local production of EMD exchanges. By 1980, P.T.INTI had provided nearly 45% of all exchanges (line units) in Indonesia, using EMD technology from Siemens. Further contracts followed during PELITA III-V, including a licensing agreement for transmission systems and the introduction of digital TDMA transmission systems. In 1982, the fully digitalized EWSD system from Siemens was introduced to Indonesia under the name STD-1. Manufactured locally by P.T.INTI under a new licensing agreement, it was the first standardized digital switching system in the country. To date, together with P.T.INTI, Siemens has contracted for or installed more than 4.2 million EWSD ports in Indonesia. The contracts in the last few years for outside plant with P.T. Telkom include more than 3,000 km of nonmetallic self supporting aerial cable, with installation. 1996 a manufacturing plant for fiber optic cables in Jakarta started production. Its capacity is 100 km of fiber optic and submarine cables per year.

Iran

In 1967 Siemens made a substantial contribution in support of the national industry by signing a licensing agreement in return for a 20% share of the newly founded Iranian Telecommunication Manufacturing Company (ITMC) in Shiraz. From 1969 to 1990, ITMC had a significant impact on the expansion of the Iranian telecommunications network. Approximately 1.25 million lines of the Siemens analog switching system EMD were commissioned during this period. The company's added net value rose continuously up to 80% at a mean production level of 50,00 lines per annum. Following the conversion from analog to digital switching technology, Siemens has delivered or contracted for 1.6 million digital electronic switching system (EWSD) ports to date.
